There is something about a university that makes a city feel even more like a city than a cathedral. To have that undercurrent of student life going on until 6 am, in my opinon, is essential to the dynamism of a city. Particularly in Venice (as it always seems to be) it is particuarly noticeable the areas that ‘belong’ to each university horde, chosen because of the vicinity to a library or faculty (or more likely because of the price of wine).
